A Look Back: History of Mama
We don't know exactly when Mama was first settled. But it was already a town before the Spanish arrived. It was part of a local area called Tutulxiu. When the Spanish took over, Mama became part of a system called encomienda in 1580. This system gave control of land and people to Spanish settlers.
In 1821, Yucatán declared its independence from Spain. A few years later, in 1825, Mama was officially recognized as its own municipality. This meant it could govern itself more.
How Mama is Governed
The municipality of Mama is led by a Municipal President. This leader is chosen by the people and serves for three years. The president works with a town council.
The town council has four members. They help manage different parts of the municipality. These include public works, education, culture, sports, public sanitation, clean water, and public lighting.
The Municipal Council is in charge of the municipality's money. They decide how to spend it and make sure all reports are done. They also help set standards for local schools every year.
Police Commissioners help keep order and safety in Mama. They make sure rules are followed. They also help carry out decisions made by the council.
