Manchester is a small town located in the northern part of Bolivia. It is found in the Pando Department, right on the banks of the Manuripi River. This area is part of the amazing Amazon rainforest. Manchester is about 60 miles (97 km) away from Cobija, which is the capital city of the Pando Department.

How Manchester Got Its Name

The town of Manchester was named by a man called Anthony Webster-James. He was an engineer from Manchester, England, who worked with metals. Towards the end of the 1800s, he came to this area.

Anthony Webster-James set up a special factory here. This factory was used to process rubber, which was a very important product at that time. He worked with Simon Patino, a famous Bolivian businessman.

A small community of workers grew around this rubber factory. Anthony Webster-James decided to name this new settlement "Manchester" to honor his hometown in England.

Getting Around in Manchester

Manchester is a very remote town. There are not many paved roads in this part of Bolivia. Because of this, most people and goods travel by river. The Manuripi River acts like a main highway for the town.
