Manchester is a community located in southeastern Houston, Texas, United States. It covers an area of about 6 square miles (15.5 square kilometers). Manchester is close to the Houston Ship Channel, which means it's near many industrial places like chemical plants and oil refineries.

History of Manchester
Manchester started in the 1860s as a simple railroad switch, a place where train tracks could be changed. By the 1970s, the area became mostly industrial, with many factories and plants. In the 1980s, more and more people of Hispanic heritage moved to Manchester, making it a mostly Hispanic community.
The State of Texas found that Manchester had higher levels of certain air chemicals compared to other places in Texas, especially after the year 2000. To help with this, the State opened a special air pollution monitor in Manchester on May 27, 2005. This monitor helps keep an eye on the air quality.
In 2019, Sylvester Turner, who was the Mayor of Houston at the time, included Manchester in a special program called "Complete Communities." This program aims to improve neighborhoods and make them better places to live.
What Manchester Looks Like
Manchester, along with nearby Harrisburg, has about 455 houses. The area is known for its many industrial facilities. You can find chemical plants, oil refineries, and even places where cars are crushed. Some of the big companies with plants nearby include Goodyear, LyondellBasell, Texas Petro-Chemicals, and Valero.
Manchester is also located near another Houston community called Magnolia Park.
Who Lives in Manchester?
As of 2017, about 4,000 people lived in and around Manchester. By 2018, nearly 2,000 people lived specifically in the Harrisburg/Manchester area. A large majority of these residents, about 98%, are Hispanic or Latino.
In 2015, the larger Harrisburg/Manchester Super Neighborhood, which includes both areas, had 2,926 residents. Most of them (82%) were Hispanic. A smaller number were non-Hispanic Black (14%) or non-Hispanic White (3%).
