Manchester Grammar School facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) is a famous independent day school for boys in Manchester, England. It is one of the largest schools of its kind in the United Kingdom.

MGS started way back in 1515. It was first known as a free grammar school, which meant it taught important subjects like Latin and Greek without charging fees. After World War II, MGS became a "direct-grant grammar school." This meant it got some money from the government to help with costs. However, in 1976, the government changed its rules and stopped giving these grants. So, MGS decided to become a fully independent school, meaning it no longer received government funding. Today, like many independent schools, there is a fee to attend.

Amazing Achievements

MGS is well-known for its excellent academic results. Students at MGS often achieve very high grades in their exams. For example, in 2017, most students got top grades in their A-Levels. These are important exams students take before going to university. Also, a large number of students earned the highest possible grades in their GCSE and IGCSE exams, which are usually taken around age 16. This shows how dedicated the students and teachers are to learning.
