Maria Malvina Gertler was born in Budapest, Hungary, on December 26, 1912. Her father was Ferenz Joseph Gertler.
Early Life and Marriage
Maria moved to England in 1935. In 1938, she married Mowbray, Lord Howard of Effingham. He later became the 6th Earl of Effingham.
During World War II
Before Second World War started, Maria was thought to be involved in espionage, which means spying. On February 10, 1941, she was held in Holloway Prison. She was released on July 16, 1941. This happened because there was not enough clear proof against her.
When she was arrested, Lady Howard said, "There is nothing I would not do for this country." She was set free a few months later. There was no proof that she knew about any suspected activities.
Later Life
Maria's marriage to Lord Howard ended in 1945 or 1946. After her divorce, she moved to Australia. She passed away in Australia in the year 2000.
