Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Mandjildjara people, also known as Manyjilyjarra, are an Aboriginal Australian group. They come from Western Australia.

Where They Lived

The Mandjildjara people lived in a large area of Western Australia. Their traditional land was about 22,500 square kilometers (8,700 square miles). This area included parts of what is now called the Canning Stock Route. They lived near important water sources like Tjundu'tjundu and Watjaparni. They also used watering places like Kolajuru and Kunkunba. Their land stretched south to Tjanbari hill and east to a waterhole called Ngila.

A Look at Their History

In 1964, a government officer named Walter MacDougall met a group of nine Mandjildjara women. They were in an area called Percival Lakes. At that time, their land had been suffering from a very bad drought for over ten years. Because of the drought, many desert people, including some Mandjildjara, had to move. They traveled east to places like Balgo and Papunya to find food and water. These groups were sometimes generally called Pintubi people.
