About Manfred Kielnhofer
Manfred "KILI" Kielnhofer was born in Haslach an der Mühl, Austria. He finished his studies at a technical college in Linz in 1995. He was very interested in technology, design, and art. This led him to develop his own unique style of art. Since 2000, he has worked as a full-time artist in Linz. In 2005, he opened his own art gallery called Artpark in Linz.
Kielnhofer's Artworks
Kielnhofer is most famous for his artwork called "Guardians of Time". These are stone statues that look like they are wearing hooded robes. They seem to be moving in a mysterious way. Sometimes, the figures stand alone. Other times, they are grouped together as if they are talking to each other.
The Guardians of Time Project
Kielnhofer places his "Guardians of Time" statues in public places. These include old castles, mines, town squares, and parks. He installs them quietly, which adds to their mysterious feeling. The first of these figures was made in 2006. Since then, Kielnhofer has continued to create and place these statues all over the world. In 2012, he started making smaller versions of the guardians out of plastic.
In 2013, the first life-sized Guardians were made from bronze. In 2014, very large guardian statues, measuring 220x220x220cm, were shown at the Festival of Lights in Berlin. In 2015, he began working with glass at the Berengo Studio in Venice. In 2016, a special empty coat sculpture was made from white Carrara marble. In 2017, the "Bike Guardian rider – time traveler" artwork began its tour.
Other Art Projects
In 2009, Kielnhofer created a new type of photography. He built a special water platform in his studio. Here, he could take photos of models sitting or lying down, often on a mirror. In 2010, he helped create the idea for the Light Art Biennale Austria 2010.
His artwork called "Interlux-Chair" was shown at this event. This chair was added to the design collection of the Museum for Applied Arts in Vienna.
