Early Life and Passion
Mangesh Tendulkar was born in Kolhapur, India. When he was young, his family moved to Pune, where he went to Bhave School. After finishing his science degree (BSc), he started working at a place called Controllerate of Quality Assurance (Ammunition) in Khadki. Even though he had a job, his real love was creating cartoons and writing. He never went to a special school to learn cartooning; he taught himself!
Helping the Community
Mangesh Tendulkar started drawing funny pictures, called caricatures, in 1954. He was a big help in making people in Pune more aware of traffic rules. He worked closely with the traffic police in Pune. His cartoons and caricatures about traffic were put up at many street corners and traffic lights in the city. For 17 years, he would even stand on Karve road, Pune himself to help people understand traffic safety.
Tendulkar often stood at traffic signals, giving out postcards with messages about following traffic rules. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) used his talent to create images for their road safety campaigns. He drew 100 cartoons about his worries for the city and how to protect Pune's green spaces. He always did this with his usual gentle humor.
Besides his many cartoons, Tendulkar also wrote books filled with funny stories and his caricatures. Some of these books are called Bhuichakra and Sunday Mood. He also wrote interesting articles and books about the theater scene in Pune. He kept drawing caricatures actively until he passed away.
