Manistee is a small, unincorporated community located in Monroe County, Alabama, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Manistee was once a very busy place because of its logging industry. Many companies, like the Manistee Mill Company, Bear Creek Mill Company, and Runyan-Burgoyne Lumber Company, operated here. They cut down trees and processed timber.

History of Manistee

The Manistee & Repton Railway

To help move all the timber, the Manistee Mill Company built a special train track. This track connected the sawmills in Manistee to the main Louisville & Nashville Railroad in a town called Repton. They named this new line the Manistee & Repton Railway.

The railway started running in 1907. It was very important for transporting logs and lumber. It had over 45 miles of track and was used until the 1970s.

Interestingly, Amasa Coleman Lee, who was the father of famous author Harper Lee, helped manage the money for a law firm's investments in this railway. Harper Lee wrote the well-known book To Kill a Mockingbird.

Manistee also had its own post office for a while. It was open from 1892 to 1912, helping people send and receive mail.
