The Manitou Bathhouse or Manitou Spa is a historic building in Manitou Springs, Colorado. It sits right along Fountain Creek. This special building was once a popular place for people to bathe in mineral water. Today, the first floor has shops and businesses. The upper floors are now homes. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also find Adam's Mountain Cafe inside.
What is the Manitou Bathhouse?
The Manitou Spa building is very close to several natural mineral springs. One of these, the Soda Spring, is actually inside the building! In the early 1900s, this spa was the main social spot in town. People would gather here to relax and meet friends.
A Look Back: The Spa's History
The very first bathhouse was built between 1882 and 1883. Visitors could enjoy many things there. They might swim in a cool plunge pool. Or they could relax in hot mineral water baths. People could also see a doctor or read in quiet rooms. This original building was taken down around 1921 or 1923.
The current building was built soon after, in 1920 or 1921. It was designed for both sick and healthy people. This building is part of the Save America's Treasures project. It still has its original marble floors, a bar, and beautiful murals. For a while, the building was empty. It had been damaged by floods and was in disrepair. But it was fixed up in 2005 and is now a lively place once more.
