The Mann Creek Dam is a large structure located in Washington County, Idaho, in the western part of the state. It sits a few miles north of the town of Weiser. This dam helps manage water for local communities and creates a popular spot for outdoor fun.
Building the Dam
The Mann Creek Dam is an earthen dam. This means it is built mostly from compacted earth and rock. It was designed as an irrigation project. Irrigation is a way to supply water to farm fields, helping crops grow.
The United States Bureau of Reclamation, a government agency, oversaw its construction. The dam was finished in 1967. It stands about 148 feet (45 meters) tall above the ground and stretches 1,176 feet (358 meters) across. A local group called the Mann Creek Irrigation District now manages the dam.
Mann Creek Reservoir
The dam holds back the waters of Mann Creek, forming the Mann Creek Reservoir. This reservoir is a lake that covers about 283 acres. When it was first built, the lake could hold a lot of water. Over time, some dirt and silt settled at the bottom, slightly reducing its storage space.
The reservoir is a great place for outdoor activities. People often visit to go boating and fishing. There was once a state park on the western side of the lake, making it even easier for visitors to enjoy the area.
