Manoao is a special type of tree found only in New Zealand. It is the only species in its group, called a genus. Its full scientific name is Manoao colensoi. People also know it by other names like manoao (which is a Māori name), silver pine, Westland pine, or white silver pine.
This tree belongs to the Podocarpaceae family, which includes many cone-bearing trees. For a long time, scientists thought Manoao was part of other tree groups. But in 1996, they realized it was unique enough to have its own special group.
About the Manoao Tree
Manoao colensoi is an evergreen tree, meaning it keeps its leaves all year round. It grows slowly and can reach up to 15 meters (about 49 feet) tall. You'll often find these trees in shady, wet places across New Zealand.
The wood from the manoao tree is very good. It is known for being strong, straight, and lasting a long time. This makes it valuable for building and other uses.
Where Manoao Grows
The manoao tree is found in different parts of New Zealand.
North Island
In the North Island, you can find M. colensoi from Te Paki in the far north down to Mount Ruapehu. However, it is most common in the central areas of the North Island.
South Island
You can also find this tree growing in the western parts of the South Island. It prefers the damp and shady conditions found in these regions.
