Manouchehr Boroumand (Persian: منوچهر برومند, March 26, 1934 – December 21, 2017) was a famous weightlifter from Iran. He was known for his incredible strength. He competed in the heavyweight category. Manouchehr Boroumand made history in weightlifting. He was the first Asian weightlifter to lift more than 500 kilograms in total.

Manouchehr Boroumand: A Weightlifting Champion
Starting Strong and Olympic Hopes
Manouchehr Boroumand was born in Babolsar, Iran. He quickly became a top weightlifter in his country. From 1961 to 1968, he was the best heavyweight weightlifter in Iran. He won the national title many times during these years.
He was chosen to compete in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Sadly, he had to withdraw at the last minute because he became ill. He also missed the 1962 Asian Games. This was because Iran did not send a team to that event.
Competing on the World Stage
Manouchehr Boroumand did get to compete in the 1964 Summer Olympics. He finished 12th in the competition. This was a great achievement for him.
His best year was 1966. He won a gold medal at the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok. He competed in the over 90 kg weight class. This was a very important win for him and for Iran.
Breaking Records
Also in 1966, Manouchehr Boroumand achieved something amazing. At the 1966 World Weightlifting Championships, he lifted over 500 kilograms in total. This made him the first Asian weightlifter ever to reach this milestone. It was a huge moment in the sport.
Life After Competition
Manouchehr Boroumand stopped competing around 1968. He then decided to share his knowledge with others. From 1972 to 1980, he became a coach. He trained the national weightlifting team of Iran.
In 1976, he earned a special degree in coaching. He got this degree from the Polish Sports Academy. Later, from 1979 to 1985, he led the Iran Weightlifting Federation. This meant he was in charge of weightlifting in Iran.
Manouchehr Boroumand got married in September 1963. He had three children. He passed away on December 21, 2017, in Babolsar, Iran.
