Manuel Cabral Aguado-Bejarano (born in Seville in 1827, died in Seville in 1891) was a Spanish painter. He was known for his art in the Romantic style. Manuel Cabral was especially famous for painting scenes of everyday life and customs, a style called Costumbrismo.
His Life and Art
Manuel was the son of another painter, Antonio Cabral Bejarano. He first studied art with José Domínguez Bécquer. Later, he also learned from his own father. In 1845, he joined the art school in Seville, which is now called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría.
After finishing his studies, Queen Isabel II gave him an honorary title: "Painter to the Queen." Many years later, he became a professor at the same art academy where he had studied.
Manuel Cabral received special mentions at the national art exhibitions in Spain. These awards happened in 1858, 1864, 1879, and 1880 (in Cádiz). He also won awards in Seville in 1856, 1858, 1867, and 1878.
His paintings are very detailed. He paid close attention to clothes, buildings, and everyday objects. This makes his artworks like a historical record of his time.
Manuel Cabral is best known for his paintings of daily life, also called genre scenes. But he also painted many portraits of people. He worked for the French Duke and Duchess of Montpensier in 1877. He also painted famous actors like Teodora Lamadrid, shown in her role as Adriana Lecouvreur, and Julián Romea, dressed as Sullivan.
You can see some of his portraits at the Museo del Romanticismo in Madrid. Other important paintings by him are at the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga.
By the time Manuel Cabral died, his style of painting was starting to be seen as old-fashioned.
