Manuel Pertegaz (born May 18, 1918, died August 30, 2014) was a very famous Spanish fashion designer. He was so respected that he was even asked to take over from Christian Dior, another famous designer, in 1957. But Pertegaz decided to stay in Spain. By the 1960s, he was known as Spain's top fashion designer.
Early Life and Beginnings
Manuel Pertegaz was born in Olba, a town in Aragon, Spain. His family moved to Barcelona when he was very young.
When he was just 13 years old, Pertegaz started working for a tailor in Barcelona. Soon after, he joined a group of tailors called Angulo. When Angulo started making clothes for women, Pertegaz discovered his amazing talent for designing womenswear.
A Career in Fashion Design
Pertegaz opened his very first fashion house when he was 25, during World War II. Some of his first important clients included the wife and daughter of General Franco, who was the leader of Spain at the time.
In 1953, Pertegaz showed his fashion collections in the United States for the first time. He presented his designs in big cities like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. American buyers really loved his unique style.
A big moment came in 1957. After the sudden death of Christian Dior, a world-famous French designer, Pertegaz was offered the chance to become the head designer for Dior. However, he chose to stay in Spain and continue building his own brand.
By the 1960s, Pertegaz had a large team of 700 people working for him in Madrid and Barcelona. He was seen as the most important fashion designer in Spain. In 1968, he even designed stylish uniforms for the flight attendants of Iberia Airlines.
Many famous people wore his designs, including Hollywood stars like Ava Gardner and Audrey Hepburn. Jackie Kennedy, the wife of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, was also a client. In 2004, Pertegaz designed the beautiful wedding dress for Letizia Ortiz when she married the future King of Spain, Felipe VI.
To honor his work, a set of Spanish postage stamps featuring Pertegaz's designs was released on October 15, 2010.
Later Years and Legacy
Manuel Pertegaz passed away in Barcelona on August 30, 2014. Spain's culture and education minister, José Ignacio Wert, announced his death. He said that Pertegaz's name would always be remembered for its elegance and style.
