A Look at Marçà's Past
Marçà has a long and interesting history. In the Middle Ages, this area was taken back from its previous rulers. After this, Marçà became part of a special land area called the Barony of Entença. This was a territory ruled by a baron.
A monastery named Sant Marçal was built here in 1611. A monastery is a place where monks live and worship. However, the monastery was closed down in 1835. This happened during the rule of Isabella II of Spain. The government decided to take control of many church properties at that time. This event was known as the Desamortización. It meant that the monks could no longer live and work in the monastery. Today, only ruins of the monastery remain.
Even though Marçà has fewer people living there now than in 1900, it is still an important town. It is the third most important town in the Priorat area.
