History of the Entença Family
The Entença noble family started in the town of Entença. This town is located in a region called La Franja, which is now part of Aragon. The family began around the 11th century.
The Barony of Entença
In the 13th century, the Barony of Entença was created. A barony is a land ruled by a baron. This new barony was in the Priorat and Ribera d'Ebre areas. These lands had been taken from the Moors (often called "Saracens" in old texts). The areas needed new people to live there and build them up again.
The Barons of Entença also shared control over the city of Tortosa. This city is located further south in the Baix Ebre region.
Changes in Ownership
By 1313, a baron named William II of Entença had many debts. He decided to give the Barony of Entença to King James II of Aragon. King James II waited until William's death to take over the barony.
So, in 1324, King James II added the Barony of Entença to the County of Prades. He created this county for his son, Ramon Berenguer. This meant that the lands once controlled by the Barons of Entença became part of the County of Prades.
In 1414, Joana de Prades inherited the Barony of Entença. She married Joan Folch de Cardona. After their marriage, the Entença family line joined with the viscounts of Cardona.
Family Legacy Today
You can still see the ruins of the Casa de la Reina Teresa d'Entença in Entença village. This village is near Benavarri.
Because this family was so important, many streets and squares are named 'Entença' or 'Entenza'. You can find them in towns across Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands. Also, some towns today, like Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Marçà, Cornudella de Montsant, and Ulldemolins, still use the old colors of the House of Entença in their town symbols.
