Entença (town) facts for kids
Entença (also called Entenza or Antenza) is a tiny village in a part of Aragon, Spain, known as La Franja. It sits high up, about 576 meters (1,890 feet) above the sea level. This small place is in the Ribagorza area of Huesca Province. It's about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Benavarri, which is the main town it belongs to. Its zip code is 22580.
Like many small towns near the Pyrenees mountains, Entença has become much smaller over the last 50 years. In 2007, only 14 people lived there! The most important buildings are the recently fixed-up St. James' Church. It has a special bell tower with just one bell. You can also see the old, ruined home of Queen Teresa d'Entença. She was a countess and viscountess, and she was married to King Alfons IV of Aragon a long time ago (from 1314 to 1327).
Even though it's small, Entença still has special days! On July 25th, people celebrate St. James. Many former residents and visitors come back for this. Also, on August 6th, there's a county fair for Sant Salvador. This fair happens at the small Sant Salvador d'Entença church, which is just outside the village.
The History of Entença
Entença is a very old place. It is where the important House of Entença family came from. This family was one of the main groups in the old Crown of Aragon. The Barony of Entença was a special area of land that belonged to them. It was located near the lower River Cinca valley. They also had lands about 90 kilometers (56 miles) further south, in areas called Priorat and Terres de l'Ebre. These lands were won from the Saracens a long time ago.
Because of this important history, you can find streets or squares named 'Entença' or 'Entenza' in many towns and villages. You'll see them across Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands.
The very first time the town was written about in a document was in the year 1036. This information comes from a book called Colección diplomática de San Andrés de Fanlo by Àngel Canellas López.
