María Carmen Portela (born October 6, 1898, in Buenos Aires, Argentina – died 1983) was a talented artist. She was known for her amazing engravings and sculptures. In 1944, she moved to Montevideo, Uruguay, and became a citizen there.

Her Artistic Journey

María Carmen Portela started learning sculpture by herself. This means she was a self-taught artist. In 1929, she began to work with a famous artist named Agustín Riganelli.

Later, she went to the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. There, she studied engraving with Alfredo Guido. Engraving is a special way of making art by carving designs into a surface.

Scholarship and Moving to Uruguay

In 1939, María Carmen Portela won a special award called a scholarship. This scholarship would have allowed her to study sculpture and engraving in Europe. However, she could not use it because World War II started.

In 1944, she decided to move to Uruguay. She settled in Montevideo and became a legal citizen of Uruguay. She married a writer and teacher from Uruguay named Jesualdo Sosa.

Her Artistic Style

María Carmen Portela was very good at different art forms.

  • In engraving, she became an expert in a technique called drypoint. This method uses a sharp tool to scratch lines directly onto a metal plate.
  • In sculpture, she was famous for her portraits. These are sculptures that show the face and upper body of a person.

She also taught art to other people. One of her students was a well-known artist named Carmen Garayalde.
