María Eugenia Vaz Ferreira (1875–1924) was a talented Uruguayan teacher and poet. She was born and lived in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. María Eugenia was the younger sister of a famous philosopher, Carlos Vaz Ferreira. She also lived at the same time as other important writers like Delmira Agustini and Julio Herrera y Reissig.
Her Life and Work
María Eugenia taught literature at a university for women. She was a respected professor in her field. Later in her life, she faced health challenges. She passed away in 1924.
Her Amazing Poems
María Eugenia Vaz Ferreira is known for her deep and emotional poems. These poems often explored big questions about life, death, hope, and the mysteries of love and existence. People consider her a "metaphysical poet" because she wrote about these important, sometimes philosophical, ideas.
Her first collection of poems was called La isla de los canticos (The Island of Songs). It came out in 1925, shortly after she died. This book included forty of her chosen poems. Her brother insisted on adding one more poem called Unico poema (Unique Poem).
A second book, La otra isla de los canticos (The Other Island of Songs), was published in 1959. This book contained more poems from her notes that had not been published before. Today, a complete collection of her works, called Poesías Completas, includes 112 poems.
A Talented Musician
Besides being a poet, María Eugenia was also a musician. She wrote music as well as words. There is a special collection of historical documents, called the Lauro Ayestarán collection, that has one of her handwritten music scores. It includes both her verses and the music she composed for them.
