María José Segarra Crespo (born in 1963) is a Spanish lawyer. She served as the Spanish Attorney General from 2018 to 2020. An Attorney General is like the country's top lawyer. They lead the public prosecutor's office, which works to make sure laws are followed and justice is served.
María José Segarra started her career as a prosecutor in 1987. From 2004 to 2018, she was in charge of the Prosecutor's Office in the Province of Seville.

Her Journey in Law
Early Life and Education
María José Segarra studied law at the Autonomous University of Madrid. After finishing her studies, she joined the Prosecutor Service on September 14, 1987.
She worked in different courts in Barcelona and nearby areas. She also helped coordinate the Children's Service, which deals with legal matters involving young people.
Leading Prosecutor in Seville (2004–2018)
In 1993, María José Segarra moved to Seville. In 2004, when she was 41 years old, she became the chief prosecutor for the Province of Seville. This was a big achievement because she was one of the youngest chief prosecutors in Spain. She was also one of the first women to hold such a high position in this field.
She stayed in this important role for many years. During her time in Seville, she handled many significant legal cases. She also worked closely with the Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office on complex investigations.
María José Segarra also focused on creating and strengthening teams that deal with economic crimes. She also worked hard to improve the section that handles violence against women.
In March 2018, she became a member of the Prosecutor's Council. This is a group that advises the Attorney General. She believed it was important to improve how prosecutor's offices work. She also wanted to make sure they had enough staff and modern tools.
Becoming Attorney General (2018–2020)
On June 15, 2018, the Spanish government chose María José Segarra to be the new Attorney General. She took over from Julián Sánchez Melgar. A high legal council supported her appointment.
She officially started her new role on June 29. On July 3, 2018, she took an oath before King Felipe VI.
As Attorney General, she guided prosecutors on how to handle important national legal matters. She also issued guidelines to help prosecutors understand laws better.
María José Segarra left her position on January 15, 2020. Dolores Delgado was nominated to be her successor.
María José Segarra is a member of the Progressive Union of Prosecutors (UPF). This is a group of prosecutors who support progressive ideas in law.
