María José Segarra Crespo (born 1963) is a Spanish expert in law. She served as the Attorney General of Spain from 2018 to 2020. An Attorney General is like the chief lawyer for the government. They lead the public prosecution service, which helps make sure laws are followed. María José Segarra started her career as a prosecutor in 1987. Before becoming Attorney General, she led the Prosecutor's Office in the Province of Seville for many years, from 2004 to 2018.

Early Life and Education

María José Segarra was born in 1963 in Madrid, Spain. She studied law at the Autonomous University of Madrid. After finishing her studies, she joined the Prosecutor Service on September 14, 1987.

Her first jobs were in the courts of the Province of Barcelona. She worked in towns like Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sabadell, and Barcelona. She also helped coordinate services for children during this time.

Leading the Seville Prosecutor's Office

In 1993, María José Segarra moved to Seville. In 2004, when she was 41 years old, she became the chief prosecutor for the Province of Seville. This was a very important role. She was one of the youngest chief prosecutors in Spain at that time. She was also one of the first women to hold such a high position in this field.

She continued to lead the Seville prosecutor's office for many years. During her time there, she worked on important cases. She focused on fighting economic crimes and strengthening the section that deals with violence against women.

In March 2018, she was chosen to be a member of the Prosecutor's Council. This group advises the Attorney General. She believed it was important to have more prosecutors and to use digital tools in their work.

Becoming Attorney General

On June 15, 2018, María José Segarra was chosen by the government to become the head of the Prosecution Ministry. This meant she would be the new Attorney General of Spain. She took over from Julián Sánchez Melgar.

Her appointment was approved by the General Council of the Judiciary. She officially started her role on June 29, 2018. She took an oath before King Felipe VI on July 3, 2018.

As Attorney General, she made important decisions. For example, in September 2018, she decided that the Public Prosecutor's Office would continue to accuse certain leaders of rebellion. These leaders were involved in the 2017 Spanish constitutional crisis.

In May 2019, Segarra gave guidelines to prosecutors about how to understand "hate crime" laws. This guidance caused some discussion among lawyers.

María José Segarra left her position as Attorney General on January 15, 2020. Dolores Delgado was nominated to take her place. Luis Navajas temporarily held the office until Delgado officially started.

María José Segarra is a member of the Progressive Union of Prosecutors (UPF). This is a group of prosecutors who support progressive ideas.
