María Onetto (born August 18, 1966 – died March 2, 2023) was a talented actress from Argentina. She performed in movies, TV shows, and plays. María won a Konex Award in 2011 for her amazing work in theater. She was also very well known for her role in the 2006 Argentine TV series Montecristo. For this role, she won the Clarín and Martín Fierro Awards for best actress in a drama and as a rising star. In 2011, she also directed a rock musical called Passing Strange.
María Onetto was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on August 18, 1966. Her parents were Estela Mary Pastore and Jorge Onetto. Her father worked for an energy company and owned a restaurant. He passed away suddenly when María was just one year old.
Her family lived in a suburb called Martínez, Buenos Aires. María went to a Catholic school. When she was 17, she started studying psychology at the University of Buenos Aires. It was there that she discovered her passion for acting in the theater.
After four years, María graduated from university. For a while, she worked at the same school as her mother. In 1991, she joined Sportivo Teatral, a theater workshop led by Ricardo Bartís. She really enjoyed her time there and even taught other actors after taking classes.
In 1996, she left the workshop. She thought about studying literature and moved to Benavídez, Argentina. However, she soon realized that she truly wanted to be an actress. She started acting with Rafael Spregelburd in a play called Dragging the Cross. After that, she focused only on acting.
In 2008, María Onetto starred in Lucrecia Martel's film The Headless Woman. She played Verónica, a woman who feels very guilty and disconnected from her life after hitting something with her car.
María also performed in a 2021 play called Potestad (meaning Power). This play was directed by Norman Briski. In it, María played a male character who kidnaps a girl during Argentina's last dictatorship.
María Onetto was found in her apartment in Buenos Aires on March 2, 2023. She was 56 years old.
