María Orán was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on May 1, 1943. From a young age, she loved music. She studied music at the Canary Islands Conservatory. Later, she went to the Madrid Royal Conservatory. There, she learned to play the piano from José Cubiles. She also trained her voice with a great teacher named Lola Rodríguez de Aragón.
María Orán made her first big performance in 1963. She sang with the Spanish National Orchestra. She performed a piece from Wagner's opera, Die Walküre. After this, she became very busy. She sang at music festivals all over Spain. She also traveled to many other countries. These included Portugal, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
