About María Teresa López Beltrán
Early Life and Education
María Teresa López Beltrán was born in Tétouan on June 13, 1950. Her family soon moved to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain. There, she studied geography and history at the University of La Laguna. She earned a special degree called a licentiate. For this, she wrote a big paper (a thesis) about the rules for mills in the Ebro Valley.
In 1973, she started working at the University of Granada. She was an assistant professor there for three years. She also began working on another thesis about poverty in Spain, but she did not finish it.
Teaching and Research Career
In 1976, María Teresa López Beltrán moved to the University of Málaga (UMA). She started as an assistant professor. In 1978, she joined the Medieval Department. She wrote another important paper about the port of Málaga during the time when the Middle Ages were ending and modern times were beginning.
In 1988, she became an associate professor. This means she was a senior teacher and researcher at the university. She was also one of the people who helped start the UMA's Association of Women's Studies in 1985. She even taught courses in other cities like Zaragoza, Jaén, and Cádiz, and even in Argentina.
Discovering Cockaigne
Through her research, María Teresa López Beltrán found an old document. This document was in the Biblioteca Nacional de España (National Library of Spain). It talked about a mythical place called Cockaigne. This was the first time anyone found a mention of this place in Spain. Cockaigne is a made-up land where people live without working and food is always available.
Later Life and Legacy
María Teresa López Beltrán passed away suddenly on March 11, 2012. At the time, she was working on a book. The book was about Jewish people who converted to Christianity in Málaga during the late Middle Ages. Her work helped us understand more about history.
