Marc Sangnier facts for kids
Marc Sangnier was an important French thinker and politician. He was born in Paris on April 3, 1873, and passed away there on May 28, 1950. In 1894, he started a group called Le Sillon, which means "The Furrow". This group aimed to combine Catholic ideas with social action.
Marc Sangnier's Ideas and Actions
Sangnier wanted the Catholic Church to work more closely with the ideas of the French Republic. He also wanted to offer a different path from other worker movements that were against the church. His group, Le Sillon, was quite successful at first.
However, in 1910, Pope Pius X disagreed with some of their ideas and spoke out against the movement. Even so, a few years later, a special visitor from Pope Benedict XV, Cardinal Bonaventura Cerretti, visited the Marc Sangnier Institute. This visit showed that Sangnier's ideas were still important.
In 1912, Sangnier started a new group called the Young Republic League. This group continued to promote his vision of social Catholicism.
Spreading His Message
Marc Sangnier also started a newspaper called La Démocratie. Through this newspaper, he supported important causes like equal rights for women. He also pushed for a fairer way to vote in elections, called proportional representation. Sangnier was a strong believer in peace, also known as pacifism.
He was also one of the first people in France to help create youth hostels. These are places where young people can stay cheaply while traveling. In 1928, he gave Émilien Amaury his very first job. Amaury later went on to create a large publishing company.
