Marcelino Vaquero González del Río (born February 13, 1932 – died May 25, 2020), known as Marcelino Campanal, was a famous Spanish footballer. He played as a defender. He was part of teams like Real Avilés CF, Sevilla FC, Deportivo de La Coruña, and CD Iliturgi from 1947 to 1969. He also played for the Spanish national team 11 times.
Playing for Football Clubs
Marcelino Campanal was born in northern Spain. But he started his football journey in the youth teams of Sevilla when he was 16 years old. As a teenager, he was loaned out to other teams a few times.
When he turned 19, he joined Sevilla's main team. He quickly became a key player. He stayed with Sevilla for 16 seasons! Many big clubs in Europe, like Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Barcelona, were interested in him. But he chose to stay with Sevilla.
Even though he played for Sevilla for so long, he never won a major title with them. His team finished second in the league twice. They also lost in two Copa del Rey finals, in 1955 and 1962.
In 1966, at 34 years old, he left Sevilla. He then joined Deportivo de La Coruña. After that, he played for C.D. Iliturgi. He retired from football at age 37 while playing for Real Avilés.
Playing for Spain
Campanal was a regular player for the Spanish national team in the 1950s. He even became the team captain when he was just 23 years old. In 1954, he was named the Spanish Sportsman of the Year. This was a big honor for him.
His Football Legacy
Campanal was known for being a very energetic defender. Many people believe he was the best defender in the history of Sevilla. On November 22, 2011, he was added to Sevilla's Hall of Fame. He was the third player to receive this honor. The first two were Juan Arza and José María Busto.
