Marcelo Ribeiro Freixo is a Brazilian politician and teacher. He is currently part of the Workers' Party (PT). He has held important roles in government.
Freixo served as a federal deputy. This means he was a representative for the state of Rio de Janeiro in the national parliament. He also led a special group in the Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly. This group focused on protecting human rights.

Who is Marcelo Freixo?
Marcelo Freixo was born on April 12, 1967. His birthplace is São Gonçalo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He studied history at Fluminense Federal University. Later, he became a teacher.
A Champion for Human Rights
Freixo became well-known for his work in the Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly. He led a special investigation into groups called "police militias." These groups acted like police but were not official. His work aimed to protect people's rights.
His efforts even inspired a character in a Brazilian movie. The film was called Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. It was directed by José Padilha.
Running for Mayor
Marcelo Freixo has run for mayor of Rio de Janeiro city two times. The first time was in 2012. He ran again in 2016.
In both elections, he reached the second round of voting. However, he did not win the election. In 2012, he lost to Eduardo Paes. In 2016, he lost to Marcelo Crivella.
Political Journey and Parties
Politicians sometimes change their political parties. Marcelo Freixo has been part of a few different parties. He started with the Workers' Party (PT).
In 2005, he joined the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL). He stayed with PSOL until 2021. Then, he moved to the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB).
In January 2023, Freixo returned to the Workers' Party (PT). He is currently the Chair of the Brazilian Tourist Board. This role helps promote tourism in Brazil.
