Marco Antonio Montes de Oca (born August 3, 1932 – died February 7, 2009) was a talented Mexican poet and painter. He was known for his many poems and also spent a lot of time painting and sculpting.
Montes de Oca wrote many important poetry books. Two of his most famous works are Ruina de la infame Babilonia (1953) and Delante de la luz cantan los pájaros (1959). The second book even won a special award called the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize. He also wrote a book about his own life, called a memoir, in 1967. In 1966, he published a collection of short stories titled Las fuentes legendarias.
Some of Montes de Oca's poems were translated into English. A translator named Laura Villaseñor helped bring his work to more readers. Her translations include The heart of the flute (1978) and Twenty-One Poems (1982). A famous writer named Octavio Paz even wrote an introduction for The heart of the flute.
Marco Antonio Montes de Oca passed away in Mexico City on February 7, 2009.
