Marco Aurélio Garcia (born June 22, 1941 – died July 20, 2017) was an important politician from Brazil. He was a member of the Workers' Party, which is a major political group in Brazil.
He was also a professor who taught about Latin American history. He worked at several universities, including UNICAMP in Brazil, the University of Chile, and universities in Paris, France. People sometimes called him "The Professor" because of his background.

Marco Aurélio Garcia's Early Life
Marco Aurélio Garcia went to high school in Porto Alegre, Brazil. There, he became involved in student groups that wanted social change. He later studied philosophy and law at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
In the 1960s, he was the vice-president of the National Student Union. He also served as a city councilman in Porto Alegre.
Life During the Military Dictatorship
From 1970 to 1979, Brazil was under a military dictatorship. This meant the army was in charge of the country. Because of this, Marco Aurélio Garcia had to leave Brazil. He lived in Chile and France during this time. This is called being "self-exiled."
When a new law allowed people to return, he came back to Brazil in 1979. He then helped create the Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores - PT). This party became very important in Brazilian politics.
Creating the São Paulo Forum
In 1990, Marco Aurélio Garcia helped organize the "São Paulo Forum." This was a big meeting that brought together many left-wing political groups. These groups came from all over Latin America and the Caribbean.
The "São Paulo Forum" still meets regularly today. It helps these groups discuss ideas and work together. Garcia also worked as the Secretary of Culture for the cities of São Paulo and Campinas. This means he helped manage cultural activities in those cities.
Working with Presidents
Marco Aurélio Garcia helped write the plans for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's election campaigns. He did this for the elections in 1994, 1998, and 2006.
He also served as the temporary president of the Workers' Party for a few months. Later, he became the party's vice-president. In 2007, he became a special advisor to President Lula on foreign policy. He continued in this role when Dilma Rousseff became president.
Marco Aurélio Garcia passed away on July 20, 2017, in São Paulo. He was 76 years old. The government of São Paulo held a special ceremony to honor his life.
