Marconi Ferreira Perillo Júnior, born on March 7, 1963, is a Brazilian politician. He is a member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). He has served as the governor of the state of Goiás multiple times. He also became the national president of his political party in November 2023.
Early Life and Education
Marconi Ferreira Perillo Júnior was born in Goiânia, Brazil. His birthday is March 7, 1963. He grew up in Palmeiras de Goiás, which he considers his hometown. He is the first child of Marconi Ferreira Perillo and Maria Pires Perillo. He has three younger siblings: Antônio, Vânia, and Tatiana.
He attended Elementary School in Palmeiras de Goiás from 1970 to 1978. At age 14, he got his first job. He worked as a helper in a notary's office.
When he was 15, he moved to Goiânia to continue his studies. He lived with his uncle Jorge and aunt Maria Conceição.
In Goiânia, he went to Pré-Médico College from 1978 to 1980. He became friends with artists and thinkers. This was partly because his cousin, Fernando Perillo, was a popular singer.
In 1980, he was accepted into the Federal University of Goiás. He planned to study Social Science. In 1982, he was accepted into another university to study Industrial Engineering. Later, in 1985, he got a spot in a Law School.
Marconi started these courses but did not finish them. His work and growing interest in politics took up his time. He later completed his law degree in 2010.
While working in the Legislature, he met Valéria Jaime Peixoto. They got married in 1989. They have two daughters named Isabela and Ana Luísa.
His Political Journey
Marconi Perillo began his political career with the PMDB party. He led the youth division of his party twice. These terms were from 1985 to 1987 and from 1987 to 1989. During this time, he was also a member of the state leadership committee.
From 1987 to 1991, he worked as a personal assistant. He assisted Henrique Santillo, who was the governor of Goiás. After that, he became a State Deputy from 1991 to 1995.
In 1992, Perillo and other leaders left PMDB. They joined a new party called PST. In 1993, PST merged with another party. This created the Progressive Party (PP). In 1994, Perillo was elected as a Federal Deputy for PP. He was the sixth most voted candidate.
In 1998, Perillo was elected governor for the PSDB. He was only 35 years old, making him the youngest state governor in Brazil at that time. Polls had shown that former governor Iris Rezende was expected to win. Iris Rezende was a former colleague of Perillo's.
Perillo's campaign slogan was "Tempo novo" (New Times). He surprisingly defeated Iris Rezende in the second round of elections. He then became the governor of Goiás. He was re-elected in 2002 in the first round. In 2006, he did not finish his term. He decided to run for senator instead.
He was elected as a senator with 75% of the votes. He also helped his vice-governor, Alcides Rodrigues, get elected as the next state governor.
Elections for Governor
On October 3, 2010, Marconi Perillo received 1,400,227 votes. This was 46.33% of the valid votes. This result allowed him to go to a second round of elections.
The second round was on October 31, 2010. He ran against Iris Rezende of the PMDB party. Perillo was elected governor of Goiás for the third time. He received 1,551,132 votes, which was 52.99% of the valid votes.
