Marconi Perillo's Early Life and Education
Marconi Ferreira Perillo Júnior was born in Goiânia, Brazil, on March 7, 1963. Even though he was born in Goiânia, he grew up in Palmeiras de Goiás. He considers Palmeiras de Goiás his hometown. He is the oldest child of Marconi Ferreira Perillo and Maria Pires Perillo. He has three younger siblings: Antônio, Vânia, and Tatiana.
He attended Elementary School in Palmeiras de Goiás from 1970 to 1978. When he was 14, he got his first job. He worked as a helper at a notary's office in Palmeiras.
At age 15, he moved to Goiânia to continue his studies. He lived with his uncle Jorge and aunt Maria Conceição.
In Goiânia, he went to high school at Pré-Médico College from 1978 to 1980. He made friends with artists and thinkers there. This was partly because his cousin, Fernando Perillo, was a popular singer.
Marconi was accepted into several universities. In 1980, he got into the Universidade Federal de Goiás to study Social Science. In 1982, he was accepted into the Universidade Brás Cubas for Industrial Engineering. In 1985, he earned a spot at UCG Law School.
He started these courses but later left them. This was because he became very busy with his work and political activities. He later finished law school in 2010 at Faculdade Alves Faria.
In the Legislature, he met Valéria Jaime Peixoto. They got married in 1989. They have two daughters named Isabela and Ana Luísa.
Marconi Perillo's Journey in Politics
Marconi Perillo began his political career with the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) party. He led the youth division of the PMDB twice, from 1985 to 1987 and again from 1987 to 1989. During this time, he was also a member of the state leadership team.
From 1987 to 1991, he worked as a personal assistant to Henrique Santillo, who was the governor of Goiás. After that, he served as a State Deputy from 1991 to 1995. A State Deputy helps make laws for their state.
Changing Political Parties
In 1992, Perillo and Santillo, along with other PMDB leaders, joined a new party called Partido Social Trabalhista (PST). This was until 1993. Then, the PST joined with another party, Partido Trabalhista Renovador (PTR). Together, they formed a new party called Partido Progressista (PP).
In 1994, Marconi Perillo was elected as a Federal Deputy for the PP party. A Federal Deputy helps make laws for the whole country. He was the sixth most voted candidate in that election.
Becoming Governor of Goiás
In 1998, Perillo was elected governor for the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). He was 35 years old, making him the youngest state governor in Brazil at that time. Before the election, polls showed that former governor Iris Rezende was very popular. Iris Rezende was a former colleague of Perillo's and a major political leader.
Marconi Perillo's campaign used the slogan "Tempo novo" (New Times). He surprisingly defeated Iris Rezende in the second round of the election. He then became the governor of Goiás. He was re-elected in 2002 in the first round of voting.
Serving as a Senator
In 2006, Marconi Perillo did not finish his term as governor. He decided to run for a position as a senator instead. He was elected with a large number of votes, about 75%. He also helped his vice governor, Alcides Rodrigues, get elected as the new state governor. A senator helps make laws for the entire country, similar to a Federal Deputy, but in a different part of the government.
Re-election as Governor
On October 3, 2010, Marconi Perillo received many votes, which allowed him to go to a second round of elections. He ran against Iris Rezende again. On October 31, 2010, he was elected governor of Goiás for the third time. He received over 1.5 million votes.
