Marcus Annius Flavius Libo was an important Roman senator who lived a long time ago, around the late 100s AD and early 200s AD. He held a very high position called consul ordinarius in the year 204 AD. He shared this role with another important person named Lucius Fabius Cilo.

Libo came from a noble family called the Patricians, who were the oldest and most powerful families in ancient Rome. His family was from a Roman province called Hispania Baetica, which is now part of modern-day Spain.

Libo's Family Connections

Marcus Annius Flavius Libo had a famous family. His grandfather, also named Marcus Annius Libo, was a suffect consul in 161 AD. A suffect consul was like a replacement consul who took office later in the year.

His father, who had the same name as his grandfather, was a legatus (a Roman governor or commander) in Syria.

Libo's family was connected to some very important people in the Roman Empire:

  • He was related to Lucius Verus, who was a co-emperor. They shared an ancestor named Marcus Annius Verus, who was consul three times.
  • He was also connected by marriage to Emperor Antoninus Pius. Emperor Antoninus Pius married his grandfather's sister, making them relatives.

What Was a Consul?

In ancient Rome, a consul was one of the two highest elected officials. They were like the chief leaders of the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire. Consuls were in charge of the government, led armies, and oversaw important ceremonies. It was a very powerful and respected job.
