Early Life and First Performances
Marcus Canty was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Landover, Maryland. His mother, Darlene M. Canty, raised him. He started acting in church plays when he was only three years old.
He discovered his talent for singing at age 11. His first big performance was at the famous Apollo Theater in New York City. He won second place, competing against both kids and adults.
Besides singing, Canty also loved basketball. He played throughout high school but eventually had to choose between sports and music. He decided to focus on singing and follow his dream of becoming a professional artist.
Music Career
Competing on The X Factor
In 2011, Canty auditioned for the American version of The X Factor. For his audition, he sang "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder. His musical heroes include great artists like Marvin Gaye, Usher, and Whitney Houston.
During the show, Canty was mentored by judge L.A. Reid. He performed many songs and impressed the judges and audience. He often found himself in the "bottom two," meaning he was at risk of being eliminated. However, he was saved by the judges' votes or by having more public votes than his competitors.
Canty made it all the way to the semi-finals. He finished in fourth place after being eliminated by the public vote.
After The X Factor
After the show, Canty's career took off. In January 2012, he signed a recording contract with Epic Records, the same label as his mentor, L.A. Reid.
His first single was called "Won't Make a Fool Out of You." It was featured in the 2012 movie Think Like a Man. Later that year, he released another single, "In & Out," which featured the rapper Wale.
In March 2013, Canty released his first extended play (EP), called This...Is Marcus Canty. An EP is like a short album. It showed off his R&B style, which was influenced by stars like Michael Jackson and Usher. The EP appeared on the US Billboard 200 music chart.
