How Marea Atlántica Started
Marea Atlántica began in 2014. The main idea was to create a political group that would involve many people. They wanted to make decisions together for the city of A Coruña. This group aimed to run in the local elections in May 2015.
To become an official candidate, Marea Atlántica needed to collect 2,500 signatures. They successfully gathered these signatures. After that, they decided to put forward a candidate for mayor of A Coruña.
Choosing a Leader
Xulio Ferreiro, a professor from the University of A Coruña, was chosen as their candidate. He became the face of the movement.
Working with Other Parties
Marea Atlántica got support from several other political parties. These included United Left, Anova-Nationalist Brotherhood, Compromiso por Galicia, Podemos, Equo, and Espazo Ecosocialista Galego. They all worked together for the elections.
Election Success
In the 2015 local elections in A Coruña, Marea Atlántica was the most popular choice. They received 34,864 votes, which was about 31% of all votes. This success meant they won 10 seats in the city council. Xulio Ferreiro became the mayor of A Coruña.
Later Elections
In the local elections held in 2019, Marea Atlántica lost some of their seats. They won 6 seats instead of 10. Because of this, Xulio Ferreiro was no longer the mayor of the city.
