How Marea Atlántica Started
Marea Atlántica began in 2014. Its main goal was to bring together different groups and parties. They wanted to create a new political option for the city of A Coruña. This new group aimed to be more focused on people's participation. It also wanted to represent ideas from the left-wing of politics.
Joining Forces for Elections
To become an official candidate for the city council, Marea Atlántica needed support. They gathered 2,500 signatures from people in A Coruña. After getting enough support, they decided to run in the local elections. These elections were held in May 2015.
Choosing a Leader
The group chose Xulio Ferreiro to be their main candidate. He was a professor at the University of A Coruña. Many different political parties supported Marea Atlántica. These included United Left, Anova-Nationalist Brotherhood, Compromiso por Galicia, Podemos, Equo, and Espazo Ecosocialista Galego.
Elections and Results
In the A Coruña local elections of 2015, Marea Atlántica was very successful. They received the most votes, with 34,864 people voting for them. This meant they won 10 seats in the city council. A city council is a group of elected people who make decisions for the city. Xulio Ferreiro became the mayor of A Coruña.
Changes in Later Elections
However, in the municipal elections of 2019, Marea Atlántica lost some support. They won 6 seats, which was four fewer than before. Because of this, Xulio Ferreiro was no longer the mayor of the city.
