Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca (born August 5, 1827 – died August 23, 1892) was a very important Brazilian military leader and politician. He played a key role in Brazil's history. He became the first President of Brazil. This happened after he led a movement that ended the Brazilian Empire and started the Republic.

Who Was Deodoro da Fonseca?

Deodoro da Fonseca was born in a place called Alagoas, which is now part of the city of Marechal Deodoro. His family had a military background. He chose to follow in their footsteps. He joined the army at a young age.

Early Military Career

Deodoro quickly rose through the ranks in the Brazilian army. He was known for being brave and a good leader. He fought in several important conflicts.
