Margaret, Countess of Mar facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Margaret of Mar was an important noblewoman in Scotland who lived a long time ago, around the 1300s. She was known as the Countess of Mar because she inherited this special title and land all by herself. The Earldom of Mar was a very old and powerful area in Scotland.

Who Was Margaret of Mar?

Margaret was a Countess in her own right. This means she held the title and lands of Mar because she was born into the right family. It was not because she married someone important. The Earldom of Mar was a large and historic region in Scotland. It was like a big county ruled by an Earl or Countess.

Her Family and Legacy

Margaret was the daughter of Domhnall II of Mar. Her family had held the title of Earl of Mar for many years. She had a brother named Thomas. When Thomas passed away without having any children, Margaret became the Countess of Mar. This was a very important position for a woman in those times.

Margaret married William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. Together, they had a son named James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas. James inherited his father's title, Earl of Douglas. He also became the Earl of Mar because of his mother, Margaret. He even held the Lordship of Garioch, another important area.

A Brave Son: James Douglas

Sadly, James Douglas was killed in 1388. He was leading the Scottish army in a big battle called the Battle of Otterburn. This battle was a famous fight between the Scottish and English armies. James was a brave leader for Scotland.

After Margaret, her daughter Isabel became the next Countess of Mar. Isabel also took over the Lordship of Garioch. She inherited other lands from the powerful Douglas family too. Margaret of Mar's family continued to play a big role in Scottish history.
