Margaret Lee Alison was born on September 7, 1896, in Richmond, Alabama. Her parents were Annie Goode Hearst and John Dill Alison. She went to several colleges to study. She attended Converse College from 1912 to 1914. Later, she studied at the University of Alabama in 1918 and Columbia University in 1922. She was also part of two student groups, Delta Delta Delta and Theta Sigma Phi. Margaret later married Carl Christian Johansen and added his last name to hers.

Margaret Alison Johansen wrote many books, mostly for young readers. She published her books between 1924 and 1950. She often worked with her sister, Alice Alison Lide, to create stories. They even wrote some books together under a different name, "Hugh McAlister." This name was likely used for books meant for boys.

Her very first known book was History of St. Paul's Parish, which she wrote with her sister. It came out in 1924. Margaret continued to write throughout her life. Her most famous book is probably Ood-Le-Uk the Wanderer, published in 1930. This book was recognized with a Newbery Honor in 1931, which is a big award for children's literature.
