The University of Alabama (UA) is a large university located in Tuscaloosa, a city in the U.S. state of Alabama. Many people simply call it Alabama or UA for short.
UA first opened its doors in 1831. Today, about 35,000 students attend the university. It is one of the three biggest universities in Alabama. The other two main schools are Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Students at UA can study many different subjects. These include liberal arts, science, engineering, communication, education, social work, nursing, and law. They can earn different types of degrees, like bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees, and doctorates. Some also get an Education Specialist degree.
Sports and Traditions at UA
The University of Alabama is very famous for its sports teams. These teams are known as the Crimson Tide. The football team is especially well-known. They have won the national football championship many times. The team plays its home games at Bryant–Denny Stadium.
A Moment in History: 1963
In 1963, a big event happened at the University of Alabama. The governor of Alabama, George Wallace, tried to stop two African American students from enrolling. He stood in the doorway of Foster Auditorium to block them. This event is known as the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door."
However, President John F. Kennedy ordered the Alabama National Guard to step in. General Henry Graham told Governor Wallace to move, and he did. This allowed the two students to enroll, which was an important step in ending segregation at the university.
