Margaret Elizabeth Vanderhaeghe (born March 22, 1950, in Leader, Saskatchewan – died May 18, 2012) was a talented Canadian artist. Her family had German roots, and this heritage often inspired her artwork. She was famous for her paintings, which often explored ideas about who we are (identity), our past experiences (memory), and what it means to be male or female (gender).
Margaret studied at the University of Saskatchewan. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on Art in 1971. The next year, in 1972, she received another Bachelor of Arts degree. On September 2, 1972, she married the Canadian writer Guy Vanderhaeghe.
Her Artistic Journey
Margaret Vanderhaeghe taught painting in 1979. She worked at the Cypress Hills Community College in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. In 1992, she received a special award. This was the Canada 125 Medal. It honored her important contributions to the art world in Saskatchewan.
In 2003, a TV show featured her work. It was a documentary in The Artist’s Life series. This show was broadcast on the Bravo television channel.
Margaret Vanderhaeghe's art can be found in many important collections. These include the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. Her work is also at the Saskatchewan Arts Board. You can see her art at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. Other places include the City of Ottawa Corporate Collection and the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery. Her paintings are also at the University of Saskatchewan and Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton.
