Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Margaret Inequane (also known as Margaret Ine Quane or Margaret Quaine) was an English woman who lived a long time ago. She died in 1617. She is known because she was put to death for something called witchcraft.

Margaret was accused of witchcraft along with her ten-year-old son, John Cubon. People believed she used a special kind of magic, called a fertility spell, to help crops grow well. Her son was also found guilty because people thought he had "witches blood" just because he was her son. Margaret was found guilty of witchcraft, and this also meant her son was found guilty.

Margaret and her son were put to death for witchcraft in a place called Castletown, on the Isle of Man, in 1617. Records say they were put to death by burning. This was not a common way for people accused of witchcraft to be put to death in England at that time.

Margaret Inequane is important because she is the only woman known for sure to have been put to death for witchcraft on the Isle of Man. With her son, they are two of only two people confirmed to have been put to death for witchcraft on the island. Her story was even shown in a film called Solace in Wicca in 2013.
