Margaret Jacobs (artist) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Margaret E. Jacobs is a talented artist from the Akwesasne Mohawk tribe. She is famous for her amazing sculptures made from steel. She also creates beautiful jewelry and drawings. Margaret gets many ideas from her Mohawk culture and how she grew up. She finds inspiration in both natural things and man-made objects. Buildings in the United States also inspire her. They remind her of the brave Mohawk ironworkers. These workers left their homes to help build many tall structures. Much of Margaret's art tells stories about Mohawk history and her cultural background.

Early Life and Education

Margaret E. Jacobs was born on September 10, 1986. Her birthplace was Ogdensburg, New York. She grew up in the Akwesasne Mohawk tribe. Her family loved to make things with their hands. Because of this, Margaret started creating art at a very young age. She went to Ogdensburg Free Academy and finished school there in 2004. After that, she studied at Dartmouth College. She earned her bachelor's degree in Visual Arts. At Dartmouth, she also won the school's Perspectives design award. Margaret is inspired by the artist Sandy Skoglund.

Steel Medicine Exhibition

Steel Medicine was a special art show. It featured many of Margaret's steel sculptures. The exhibition was open from June 8, 2019, to April 26, 2020. You could see it at the Boise Art Museum in Boise, Idaho. Margaret says this artwork talks about how cultures change and how people keep their identity.

Old Growth Series 2019

In 2019, Margaret designed a collection called the Old Growth Series. This series shows medicinal plants. It also includes tools used by the Mohawk people long ago. These sculptures tell stories from traditional Mohawk culture.

Shedding Armor Sculpture

Shedding Armor is a steel sculpture. It looks like a turtle shell. Margaret uses strong metals to make sure the sculpture does not chip or scratch easily. She also uses a special paint called powder coating. This gives the shell natural, earthy colors.
