Margaret Leslie was an important noblewoman in Scotland. She was born before the year 1660. Margaret became the 8th Countess of Rothes, a special title passed down in her family.
Her father was John Leslie, 1st Duke of Rothes, who was the 7th Earl and also the 1st Duke of Rothes. These titles meant he was a very powerful and respected leader in Scotland.
On October 8, 1674, Margaret married her cousin, Charles Hamilton, 5th Earl of Haddington. When they married, her husband, Charles, took the last name Leslie. This was part of a special agreement for her family's noble title.
Margaret and Charles had four children. Their oldest son, John Hamilton-Leslie, became the Earl of Rothes after his mother passed away in August 1700. Another one of their sons later became the 6th Earl of Haddington.
