Margaret McCurry (born 1942) is a famous American architect. She is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, which is a special honor for architects.

Early Life and Education

Margaret McCurry was born in Chicago in September 1942. Her father, Paul McCurry, was also an architect. He designed the two houses where Margaret grew up in Chicago. He taught his children to be curious about different styles of architecture from history. Margaret went to Vassar College and graduated in 1964. She studied art history and literature there.

A Career in Architecture

Margaret McCurry worked for 11 years at a big architecture firm called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in Chicago. There, a designer named Davis Allen became her mentor, teaching her a lot.

While at SOM, she worked on important projects. These included the inside designs for the National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Nashville. She also helped with the East Wing addition to the Art Institute of Chicago. This included the School of the Art Institute and the Rubloff Auditorium.

Starting Her Own Firm

After leaving SOM, Margaret McCurry started her own architecture firm. This happened on April Fool's Day in 1977. In 1982, she teamed up with her husband, Stanley Tigerman. Together, they started their own firm in Chicago called Tigerman McCurry Architects.

Margaret McCurry has also been a leader in the architecture community. She was the chair of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Design. She also served as vice-president for the Illinois chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Notable Projects and Designs

Margaret McCurry has designed many different types of buildings and spaces. Some of her projects include the Chicago Bar Association headquarters. She also designed a private apartment on 900 N. Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

She designed a two-story farmhouse near Lake Michigan. Another project was a home in Martha's Vineyard around 1995. She also updated a mid-century modern home in Chicago. This project was featured in Architectural Digest magazine in 2009 and again in 2017.

In 2017, Margaret McCurry and her husband Stanley Tigerman announced their retirement. They closed their Chicago office after many years of work.

Personal Life

Margaret McCurry was married to Stanley Tigerman from 1979 until he passed away in 2019. They were partners in their architecture firm, Tigerman-McCurry, from 1982 to 2017. Margaret has written about her life with Stanley. She shared memories of their home in the 900-910 North Lake Shore high-rise apartment building. This building was designed by the famous architect Mies van der Rohe.

Margaret believes her astrological sign, Libra, influences her design style. She once said, "I'm a Libra. Everything in my world has to be ordered and harmoniously balanced." This shows her love for balance and order in her designs.
