The Margaret Sanger Clinic is a special historic building located at 17 West 16th Street in Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1846. This building is important because it was home to the Clinical Research Bureau from 1930 to 1973. Here, Margaret Sanger and others worked on important health studies.

The building was recognized as a New York City Landmark in 1976. This was because of its beautiful Greek Revival style of architecture. Later, in 1993, it was named a National Historic Landmark. This honor was given because of its strong connection to Margaret Sanger's work.

About the Building and Its History

The former Margaret Sanger Clinic building is found in New York City. It sits between the Chelsea neighborhood and Union Square. You can find it on West 16th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. This area has many old houses built in the Greek Revival style.

Building Design

The building is a brick house with three and a half stories. It has a special roof called a dormered gable roof. The front of the building has two main sections. The left section has a rare rounded shape that sticks out. It has two windows on each floor with stone sills and tops.

The main entrance is on the right side. It is set back a bit and has a stone frame with a fancy top. Inside, the building still has many of its original Greek Revival features. These include old fireplaces, marble floors, and a beautiful winding staircase.

A Home for Health Research

This house was built around 1846. It was designed by an architect named Edward Mesier. Margaret Sanger started her first clinic, the Clinical Research Bureau, in 1916. That first clinic was in a building in Brooklyn that is no longer there.

After that, the clinic moved to rented rooms on West 15th Street. In 1930, Margaret Sanger bought this building on West 16th Street. It became the clinic's first permanent home. For over 40 years, important health research and education happened here. Today, the building is owned by a private group.
