Margaret of L'Aigle (died 1141) was the first wife of García Ramírez of Navarre. She became the Queen of Navarre. Margaret was the daughter of Gilbert of L'Aigle and Juliana du Perche.

Life as Queen of Navarre

Margaret was from an Anglo-Norman family. Her family had connections to the area where she would later marry. Her grandmother, Beatrice of Montdidier, was the sister of Felicia, who was Queen of Navarre and Aragon.

Margaret's uncle, Rotrou III, Count of Perche, had a sad family event. His wife, son, and two nephews died in a shipwreck in 1120. These nephews were Margaret's brothers, Engenulf and Geoffrey. After this, Rotrou went to Aragon. He had fought there before. While in Aragon, he helped arrange Margaret's marriage.

Marriage and Family Life

Margaret married García Ramírez in 1130. At that time, he was the lord of Monzón. Four years later, he was chosen to be the king of Navarre. In 1135, King García confirmed the rights of the church of Pamplona. He did this with the advice of "my wife Queen Margaret."

Margaret and García had three children:

King García and Queen Margaret's relationship was sometimes difficult. There were questions about the father of her second son, Rodrigo. King García never officially recognized Rodrigo as his son. However, Rodrigo's sister Margaret treated him like a true brother. Rodrigo always acted as if he were a king's son.

Margaret died on May 25, 1141. Her husband later married again. Her younger daughter, Margaret, always remembered her mother with love.
