Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Maria Margarethe Danzi (born Marchand, 1768 – June 11, 1800) was a talented German composer and soprano singer. She was known for her beautiful voice and her musical compositions.

Maria Margarethe Marchand was born in Germany. Some records say she was born in Munich, while others say Mannheim. It's also possible her family was traveling in Frankfurt when she was born. Her mother, Magdalena Brochard Marchand, was a singer, actress, and dancer. Her father, Theobald Hilary Marchand, was in charge of the National Theatre of Mannheim.

Margarethe started learning music and composition at a young age. She studied in Munich with Franziska Lebrun and in Salzburg with Leopold Mozart, who was the father of the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

She began her career by performing in smaller roles. In 1787, when she was just 12 years old, she made her official debut at the Mannheim Court Theater. She played the main character in a play called The Youth.

In 1790, she married Franz Danzi, who was a conductor and composer. They often performed together. Margarethe became the main female singer, or prima donna, for a traveling group led by Domenico Guardasonis. They went on many concert tours across Europe. After 1796, Margarethe also became the prima donna at the Munich Court Theatre. Sadly, she passed away in Munich at a young age from a sickness that affected her lungs.
