Margrethe Vullum, a brave journalist and activist.

Margrethe Vullum (born Lehmann; 1846 – 1918) was a very important woman from Denmark who moved to Norway. She was a journalist, a literary critic, and a strong supporter of women's rights. She used her voice to make a difference in society.

Her Early Life and Family

Margrethe Vullum was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father, Orla Lehmann, was a well-known statesman. Her mother, Maria Puggaard, was an artist. Margrethe's grandparents, Hans Puggaard and Bolette Puggaard, were also quite famous. Her grandfather was a rich merchant, and her grandmother was a painter.

Margrethe married twice. Her first husband was Gotfred Rode, a teacher and writer. They had two sons: Ove Rode, who became a politician, and Helge Rode, who became a writer. Later, in 1879, she married another journalist named Erik Vullum.

Making a Difference in Norway

In 1879, Margrethe Vullum moved to Norway. She quickly started working as a journalist. She wrote for important newspapers like Dagbladet and Verdens Gang. She was one of the first women to speak up publicly about important issues.

Margrethe was not afraid to share her opinions. For example, she wrote a positive review of a book called Albertine. This book had been taken away by the authorities because it talked about difficult social issues. Margrethe believed it was an important story.

Fighting for Workers' Rights

Margrethe became very interested in politics. She was a key speaker at big protests. One famous protest was during the Kristiania match workers' strike of 1889. This was when factory workers, many of them young women, went on strike to demand better working conditions. Margrethe stood with them and spoke out for their rights.

Helping Start a Political Party

Margrethe Vullum also helped create the Liberal Left Party in 1909. This shows how dedicated she was to making changes in society through politics. She believed in fighting for what was right and fair for everyone.

A beautiful painting of Margrethe Vullum, made by the artist Oda Krohg, can be seen at the National Gallery of Norway.
