Dame Marguerite Pindling served as the tenth Governor-General of the Bahamas. She held this important role from July 8, 2014, to June 28, 2019. Being a Governor-General means she was the representative of the monarch (like a queen or king) in The Bahamas.
Dame Marguerite was born on June 26, 1932. She is the second woman to become Governor-General of The Bahamas. Before her, Dame Ivy Dumont held the position. Dame Marguerite was married to Sir Lynden Pindling, who was the very first Prime Minister of The Bahamas. They had four children together.
Early Life and Family
Marguerite Matilda McKenzie was born in South Andros, Bahamas, on June 26, 1932. Her parents were Reuben and Viola McKenzie. When she was 14, in 1946, she moved to Nassau. There, she lived with her sister and went to Western Senior School. After school, she worked as an assistant for a photographer named Stanley Toogood.
It was in Nassau that she met Lynden Pindling. He later became a very important leader for The Bahamas. He was the first black Premier of the Bahama Islands from 1967 to 1969. Then, he became the first and longest-serving Prime Minister of the Bahamas, from 1969 to 1992.
Marguerite and Lynden Pindling got married on May 5, 1956. They stayed married until his death on August 26, 2000. They had four children: Obafemi Pindling, Leslie Pindling, Monique Johnson, and Michelle Sands.
Becoming Governor-General
In 2014, Marguerite Pindling was given a special honor. She was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. This is a very high award. Soon after, on July 8, 2014, she became the Governor-General of The Bahamas. In this role, she helped to represent the country and its people. She served for nearly five years, until June 28, 2019.
