Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Marguerite Thomas-Clement (1886–1979) was an important figure in Luxembourg who worked for women's rights and became a politician. She made history by being the very first woman to serve in Luxembourg's parliament, which is like their main government meeting place.

A Pioneer for Women's Rights

Marguerite Thomas-Clement was married to Xavier Thomas, who was a socialist. She also joined the socialist party herself. In Luxembourg, there wasn't a big, organized movement pushing for women to get the right to vote, known as women's suffrage. Instead, women's suffrage was introduced in 1919 without much debate. It was simply part of a plan for a new, more democratic constitution for the country.

Speaking Up for Women's Vote

Even though there wasn't a large movement, women's rights groups in Luxembourg mainly focused on helping girls and women get better chances for education. However, between 1917 and 1919, Marguerite Thomas-Clement was one of the few people who publicly supported women's right to vote. She wrote articles in newspapers and spoke out in public discussions, making sure her voice was heard.

Making History in Parliament

In 1919, after women in Luxembourg gained the right to vote, the country held its first election where women could participate. Marguerite Thomas-Clement ran for office and won! This made her the first woman ever elected to parliament in Luxembourg. She served in this important role for many years, from 1919 until 1931. For a long time, she remained the only woman in parliament. It wasn't until 1965 that another woman, Astrid Lulling, joined her in this historic group. Marguerite Thomas-Clement truly paved the way for other women in politics.
