Beauty Pageant Journey
Becoming Miss Venezuela
Mariángel Ruiz tried to win the Miss Venezuela title twice. Her first attempt was in 1998, but she did not make it into the top 120 contestants. In 2002, she tried again and won the first round of selections in Maracay. This made her Miss Aragua 2002. Mariángel then went on to win the main Miss Venezuela pageant. This was a special year because, for the first time, only former Miss Venezuela winners judged the competition.
Competing in Miss Universe
On May 9, 2003, the Miss Venezuela Organization announced that Mariángel Ruiz might not be able to compete in Miss Universe. This was because of strict rules about money leaving Venezuela. These rules were put in place by the Venezuelan President at the time, Hugo Chavez. They made it hard for the organization to send Mariángel to Panama, where the competition was held.
However, a Venezuelan businessman named Gustavo Cisneros stepped in to help. He provided the money needed for Mariángel to go to Panama. The President of Panama at that time, Mireya Moscoso, had even asked Mr. Cisneros to make sure a Venezuelan contestant could compete. Thanks to this help, Mariángel Ruiz was able to represent her country. She achieved a great result, finishing as the 1st runner-up in Miss Universe 2003.
