Mariángel Ruiz's Pageant Journey

Becoming Miss Venezuela 2002

Mariángel Ruiz tried to win the Miss Venezuela title two times. The first time, in 1998, she didn't make it into the top group of candidates. But in 2002, she won the first round in Maracay, which made her "Miss Aragua 2002." Mariángel then won the main Miss Venezuela contest that year. This was a special year because, for the first time, only past Miss Venezuela winners judged the competition.

Competing in Miss Universe 2003

On May 9, 2003, there was a problem with Mariángel going to the Miss Universe contest. The Miss Venezuela Organization announced that she might not be able to compete. This was because the Venezuelan government had strict rules about sending money out of the country. These rules made it hard for the organization to pay for her trip to Panama, where the contest was held.

However, a Venezuelan businessman named Gustavo Cisneros stepped in to help. He provided the money needed for Mariángel to compete in Panama. The President of Panama at the time, Mireya Moscoso, had even asked Cisneros to make sure a Venezuelan contestant could be there. Thanks to their help, Mariángel Ruiz was able to represent Venezuela and placed as the 1st runner-up at Miss Universe 2003.
