Maria Barbal facts for kids
Maria Barbal i Farré is a Spanish writer. She was born in Tremp, Pallars Jussà, on September 17, 1949. Maria spent her childhood in the countryside of Catalonia. This experience deeply shaped her writing. In 1964, when she was 14, she moved to Barcelona to continue her education. She later studied Hispanic Studies at the University of Barcelona.

Maria Barbal's Writing Journey
Even though Maria Barbal has lived in Barcelona since the 1960s, her first books were about the Pallars region. This is where she grew up as a child and teenager. She looked at this rural area with a careful eye. Her first novel, Pedra de tartera, which means 'Stone from a boulder', was set entirely in this area. It was very popular with both readers and critics. This book was also translated into English as Stone in a Landslide.
Later, Maria Barbal started writing about city life. She has also written many short stories. Some of her books are for young people. She has even written a play for the theater.
Maria Barbal's books have been translated into several languages. These include French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. She has received many important awards for her work. In 2001, she was given the Creu de Sant Jordi. This is one of the highest honors in Catalonia. In 2021, she received the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes. This award recognized her big contributions to Catalan literature.
